Branching palm to 18M

Fruit is eaten by baboons, monkeys and elephants.
Fruit is edible and the sap used for alcohol, leaves used for baskets and thatch. Turacos are often sitting in my palm.

Self seeded.

This is a low maintenance spectacular shrub very suited to coastal gardening. Grows from seed.

This species is understood to be poisonous, but it is used medicinally.

Shrub available from local nurseries.

Shrub or tree to 8M tall.
Habitat: sometimes dominant in the shrub layer of lowland evergreen forest. Aromatic bark. Sometimes
used for food flavouring. Flowers with unpleasant scent. Green petals turn white / crimson.

The roots and leaves are used as medicines.

Available at Kivukoni Indigenous Tree Nursery.

Barleria Maritima I.Darbysh.

Family: Acanthaceae

Listed as a vulnerable species according to IUCN Red List criteria.

Spiny evergreen herb, with yellow/ orange flowers. Around one metre high. Could be used for hedging. Self seeded. Easily propagated from cuttings. Sun or part shade.

Pollinated by insects and attracts various species of butterflies. The insects attract insectivorous birds. Many butterfly caterpillars feed on Barleria (see Acanthaceae butterflies)

Possibly a larval foodplant to:

  • Junonia orithya – Eyed Pansy
  • Junonia natalica – Natal Pansy
  • Catacroptera cloanthe – Pirate

Perennial or shrubby herb

Commonly cultivated on the coast.

Groundcover. Easily propagated from cuttings.
Shade or sun. Flowers throughout the year.
Attracts insects and birds. Many butterfly caterpillars
feed on Barleria (see Acanthaceae butterflies)
